The long-delayed The Flash has a new superfriend. Director Andy Muschietti (It) confirmed recently that Sasha Calle (The Young and the Restless, pictured above) is joining the cast as the latest iteration of Supergirl.
The Flash, which stars Ezra Miller as Barry Allen, is expected to start filming this year.
Muschietti auditioned more than 400 actresses before landing on Calle, who joins a short list of actresses who’ve played the role—and is the first Latina Supergirl. Melissa Benoist has been playing the character on The CW’s Supergirl for five seasons, but the show’s upcoming sixth season will be its last.

Calle’s casting is the latest step in a long journey for The Flash. Miller made his debut as the speedster in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice in 2016 and was one of the members of Justice League the following year. (He also made a quick appearance on the TV show of The Flash in last year’s “Crisis on Infinite Earths” crossover extravaganza.) But the character’s standalone film has been in the works since 2015. Seth Grahame-Smith and Rick Famuyiwa were both previously attached as directors, but it sounds like Muschietti is farther into the process than either of them ever got. Christina Hodson (Birds of Prey) wrote the script.
Because everything needs a multiverse lately, two Batmans, Michael Keaton and Ben Affleck, will appear in the film, which is expected to be based on the comics’ “Flashpoint” storyline. However, Ray Fisher’s Cyborg will not be part of The Flash. Last year, Fisher accused director Joss Whedon of misconduct on the set of Justice League. Warner Bros. conducted an investigation and took “remedial action.” A few weeks later, Fisher—who has also criticized the behavior of former DC Entertainment president Geoff Johns and current DC Films president Walter Hamada—announced that he had been removed from The Flash.
Fisher will appear in Zack Snyder’s Justice League, which airs on HBO Max next month. The Flash currently has a release date of November 4, 2022.
